Various Sports Round up and some of this week’s Major Recaps
Roughly one quarter of the season has passed in the NFL. In college football we’re at the midway point. The MLB playoffs have started in spite of Arron Judge taking FOREVER to hit 62 home runs. The NBA is in pre season mode with pre season drama. We’re six weeks away from the start of World Cup soccer in a country where alcohol is banned and illegal to possess. We’re on the cusp of another NCAA basketball season and the NHL is filling arenas for pre season hockey. Throw into this mix woman’s soccer, PGA and LIV golf, Champions League Soccer, Liverpool and Manchester City football and a Sunday morning NFL game in London and you’ve got yourself a pretty big buffet of sports my friends. Grab a knife and a fork and dig in.
In the NFL we’re barely into the season and heads are beginning to roll both literally and figuratively. Injuries and concussions have reaped havoc throughout the league. Head Coach Matt Rhule was fired by The Carolina Panthers after a dismal start with Quarterback Baker Mayfield. However, he walked with a 40 million dollar buy out so I have zero sympathy. After loosing both first and second string quarterbacks to concussions, the Miami Dolphins are struggling with a third string quarterback who never took a snap in an NFL game prior to Sunday’s loss against the Jets. It’s been a tough two weeks for The Dolphins.
Several NFL other teams are playing their way through some serious quarterback drama. The Dallas Cowboys have a back up QB who is undefeated while in the wings waits Dak Prescott, their 100 million dollar investment. Jerry Jones hasn’t had it this good in years. Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Kenny Pickett got destroyed by The Buffalo Bills this past week. Let remember that both Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady both had really bad starts and look where they ended up. Baker Mayfield is out for several weeks, again, but The Panthers just fired their head coach so does it really matter? Throughout the league the quarterback positions are an up and down affair, except with the Bills and The Chiefs who have rock solid performers in Allen and Mahomes.
Here’s the end of all of it, several teams like The Giants, The Cowboys, The Chiefs, The Eagles and of course The Bills look excellent but don’t rule out the 49ers, The Vikings or The Ravens either. The season is young. We have a long way to go.
Major League Baseball zipped right through wild card series games in a matter of like 3 days. Shockingly to most but not to be as I did mention the Padres in my (August 7th Article) The New York Mets were eliminated. After a Stellar season they slipped at the end to a resilient team the San Diego Padres who survived a drama filled season. In the American League The Astros and The Yankees are of course in the hunt after having a very successful two seasons. The Mariners, The Phillies, Cleveland Guardians, The LA Dodgers and of course The Atlanta Braves round out the remaining survivors of a long, hot summer.
Once again, college football did not fail to entertain. Alabama slipped to number 3 on The AP Poll after barely squeezing by Texas A&M. A great game in a great football atmosphere. The season seems to mirroring last year with Georgia, Clemson and Ohio State rounding out the top four much like last year at this time. However, unlike last season at this point, there is a glut of undefeated teams waiting in the wings, ready to move up to a top spot. Ole Miss, TCU, Penn State, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Syracuse remain undefeated. UCLA and Southern Cal are also undefeated and are still suffering a virtual black out in media recognition, something I discussed last week. Tennessee is at a high point at 5-0 as well, and this weekend the 107,000 fans in Neyland Stadium will go crazy as they take on Alabama in a huge SEC showdown. Tennessee vs. Alabama is my “must watch” game of the weekend.
All in all it’s been a 50/50 week for my picks on both college and pro football. There are some teams however that have really let me down and I will stay away from the rest of the season. As I mentioned before I’m beginning to make picks based on research, facts and data. I’ve left intuition, emotional ties and gut feelings out of it. I’ve also completely eliminated Oklahoma, The Las Vegas Raiders and The Baltimore Ravens from ever entering my pick em thought process again. In the end I hope only to have picked more winners than losers. As this point I’m focusing on survival.
This week’s “Hat’s Off” moment goes to Arron Judge who broke Roger Maris’s American League single season record with 62 home runs. I’d like to remind everyone that Barry Bonds hit 73 in a single season, so who’s the real Homerun King right?
Not to be outdone, this week’s “Paint a Big L On Your Forehead Because You’re a Loser” goes to Las Vegas Raider wide receiver Devante Adams who literally leveled a side line camera man while walking off the field after a loss to the Chiefs. I have a feeling that this incident will cost him a couple hundred grand. Hopefully Adams will sit for a week or two.
Until next week sports fans!!!

Daniel Weinman was crowned winner of the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event on Monday, taking home a record breaking $12.1 million in winnings. Weinman had to outlast the other 10,043 entrants to take home the prize and get his hands on his share of live poker’s largest ever prize pool – a staggering $93,399,900. As well as taking home the prize money, 35-year-old Weinman also got his hands on the WSOP Main Event bracelet. The huge bracelet contains 500 grams of 10-karat yellow gold, as well as 2,352 various precious gemstones.
Daniel Weinman won the World Series of Poker's main event world championship on Monday in Las Vegas, earning $12.1 million along the way. Playing in the tournament for a 16th year, Weinman was tops in a deep pool of 10,043 players vying for $93.39 million. His victory came after just 164 hands at the final table. "I was honestly on the fence about even coming back and playing this tournament," the 35-year-old Atlanta native told reporters afterward. Weinman's final table featured Jan-Peter Jachtmann, who landed in fourth place and took home $3 million, as well as Toby Lewis, who finished seventh and secured $1.42 million. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the main event's entry pool far outpaced the previous record of 8,773 set in 2006. "I've always kind of felt that poker was kind of going in a dying direction, but to see the numbers at the World Series this year has been incredible," Weinman said. "And to win this main event, it doesn't feel real. I mean, [there's] so much luck in a poker tournament. I thought I played very well." Steven Jones finished second, securing $6.5 million. And Adam Walton settled for third and a $4 million prize.
