Shohei Ohtani emphatically assisted himself on Monday.
In between turns on the mound as the Los Angeles Angels' starting pitcher, the All-Star homered against the Baltimore Orioles with one of the league's hardest swings of the year. In doing so, he helped the Angels win 9-5 with a four-hit night at the plate and the victory.
In the top of the fourth inning, with two men on and one out and the score at 4-4, Orioles starter Grayson Rodriguez delivered an 80 mph breaking ball as his first pitch. It landed in the center of the plate. Ohtani utilized the gift to its fullest.
He threw the ball to the right center of the field. There was no question that the ball was exiting the field of play as soon as he made contact. Whether Camden Yards could contain it was the only issue.
The ball was thrown above the spectators in the right-center field bleachers and rebounded against the top of the park fence. Ohtani made it to home plate after running the bases cleanly and was presented by his teammates with the Samurai warrior helmet that has come to symbolize his home run celebrations.
Ohtani now has 29 RBI after hitting his ninth home run of the year. One of the hardest hit balls in MLB this year, it gave the Angels a 7-4 edge. The 114.6 mph exit velocity ranks as the 15th-hardest home run of the season, according to Statcast. The 456-foot distance made it the 14th-longest home run of the year.
Of course, the bomb was the season's longest home run by a pitcher. However, a home run hit by Ohtani earlier this season at 116.7 mph had a higher exit velocity than it.
After giving up home runs to Adam Frazier and Anthony Santander earlier in the game, Ohtani needed the assistance. The best person to turn to is himself.
Ohtani finished the game 4-of-5 with two singles, a triple, a walk, three RBI, three runs scored, and the aforementioned home run. The effort more than made up for Ohtani's lackluster outing on the mound, as he allowed 5 earned runs, 3 home runs, 5 strikeouts, and 2 walks across seven innings. His attacking outburst played a factor in the fact that it was more than sufficient to secure the victory.
Another amazing season is currently underway for the all-action All-Star. Ohtani has a.287/.361/.513 slash line with 8 home runs, 6 stolen bases, and 26 RBI as of Monday. In 46 innings pitched, he had a 2.74 ERA, a 0.913 WHIP, 66 strikeouts, and 20 walks.

"And to win this main event, it doesn't feel real. I mean, [there's] so much luck in a poker tournament. I thought I played very well." Steven Jones finished second, securing $6.5 million. And Adam Walton settled for third and a $4 million prize.
