Report: Canada's 2018 World Juniors players ineligible for national team until investigation is complete

Members of Canada's 2018 World Juniors roster will be unable to participate for the national team while an investigation into an alleged group sexual assault proceeds, Hockey Canada announced in a statement to TSN's Rick Westhead on Monday.

According to Hockey Canada, such a decision would have the greatest immediate influence on probable roster options for the 2023 IIHF Men's Hockey Championship, which would be held in Finland from May 12-28.

"Earlier this year, Hockey Canada decided that no players from the 2018 National Junior Team would be considered for Team Canada participation until the investigation and adjudicative process of the alleged incident in 2018 were completed."

In a subsequent interview on TSN's That's Hockey, Westhead described Hockey Canada's choice as a "calculated decision." Westhead feels that it is better to remove all players from participating than to risk a player suiting up for Canada only to be implicated later.

Earlier on Monday, the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage overwhelmingly passed a motion asking that Hockey Canada disclose the full findings from the inquiry into the sexual assault accusations conducted by legal firm Henein Hutchison. The firm's examination first began in June 2018 and ended in September 2020. The probe, however, was reopened once news of a lawsuit and settlement surfaced in May 2022. Politicians are criticizing the delay in information dissemination.

The charges suggest that up to eight players were engaged in the assault, while Westhead states that a separate (active and ongoing) investigation by London, Ont., police provided them with "reasonable grounds to charge five players with sexual assault."

Along with Hutchison's business and London police, the NHL is looking into sexual assault allegations leveled against players of Canada's 2018 World Juniors squad.

As you can see from the entire roster below, that squad had numerous NHL players and/or prospects.
