LET’S HEAR YOUR STORY
DETROIT — When the Brooklyn Nets are ousted from the playoffs, or if the New York Knicks are a larger disaster — or when a trade demand is made — there is just quiet. They've been creeping over the last several weeks, and now they're on the rise, making themselves relevant in the Eastern Conference. However, Kevin Durant perceives a lack of interest in his squad.
"I understand that some people don't see our team as a championship roster, but when we win the way we win, you have to pay attention," Durant told Yahoo Sports. "When Kai [Kyrie Irving] and Ben [Simmons] didn't play, we won opponents by [almost] 40 points. 'Hold on, what are they doing over there?' says any other team.
It is a little heavier in New York, something Durant was aware of before to signing with the Nets in the summer of 2019. Irving has always been a lightning rod for criticism because he appears to encourage and, at times, instigate it.
However, Irving has been productive since returning from his ban for promoting an anti-Semitic film and making subsequent statements, while Durant has been playing at an MVP level all season. He's been in a rhythm that matches some of his greatest performance during his previous 11 games, averaging 32 points on 63% shooting, 43% from 3-point range, and 6.5 rebounds and five assists per game.
Irving hasn't taken a break or said anything controversial recently. Irving's connection with Nike has ended, and aside from a few social media comments, he has remained mostly silent. Durant's focus and sanctuary has been the game. Much of his criticism of the media has been on basketball being overshadowed by other issues.
Unfortunately, that's not how it works, especially in the Twitter world and the other world where basketball players are paid well because their personal brands extend beyond the court.
“I feel like we’ve got a good roster. I feel like we are putting forth the effort to play playoff-style basketball,” Durant said. “I think you got guys who can play different ways. So yeah, we can win basketball games, simply put. If we do that every day and start building up, we’ll see what happens in the playoffs.”
Daniel Weinman was crowned winner of the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event on Monday, taking home a record breaking $12.1 million in winnings. Weinman had to outlast the other 10,043 entrants to take home the prize and get his hands on his share of live poker’s largest ever prize pool – a staggering $93,399,900. As well as taking home the prize money, 35-year-old Weinman also got his hands on the WSOP Main Event bracelet. The huge bracelet contains 500 grams of 10-karat yellow gold, as well as 2,352 various precious gemstones.
Daniel Weinman won the World Series of Poker's main event world championship on Monday in Las Vegas, earning $12.1 million along the way. Playing in the tournament for a 16th year, Weinman was tops in a deep pool of 10,043 players vying for $93.39 million. His victory came after just 164 hands at the final table. "I was honestly on the fence about even coming back and playing this tournament," the 35-year-old Atlanta native told reporters afterward. Weinman's final table featured Jan-Peter Jachtmann, who landed in fourth place and took home $3 million, as well as Toby Lewis, who finished seventh and secured $1.42 million. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the main event's entry pool far outpaced the previous record of 8,773 set in 2006. "I've always kind of felt that poker was kind of going in a dying direction, but to see the numbers at the World Series this year has been incredible," Weinman said. "And to win this main event, it doesn't feel real. I mean, [there's] so much luck in a poker tournament. I thought I played very well." Steven Jones finished second, securing $6.5 million. And Adam Walton settled for third and a $4 million prize.
