The Denver Nuggets came to close. On Thursday night, Nikola Joki and the Nuggets completely demolished the undermanned Phoenix Suns to clinch their place in the Western Conference finals. At the Footprint Center in Phoenix, the Nuggets easily defeated the Suns 125-100 to win the Western Conference semifinal series 4-2. The win had the biggest margin of victory for a road team thus far in the playoffs. By the end of the first quarter, the Nuggets were well ahead and never looked back. In the final three minutes of the period, they went on a 17-0 run to close off the scoring and take an 18-point lead. A second 17-4 run they had in the final minutes of the second quarter let them swiftly increase that to 30 before halftime. The Suns were being outrebounded by 11 and Denver nearly totally shut off Kevin Durant. After making only 2-of-11 shots from the field in the first half, Durant was limited to just 8 points. Joki led the Nuggets on Thursday with 32 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds, setting an NBA record for a center. It was his 10th career postseason triple-double. Since Russell Westbrook in 2017, he is the only player to record three triple-doubles in a single postseason series. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope ended with 21 points, while Jamal Murray scored 26. They also had a team field goal percentage of around 54%. Durant scored 23 points overall and made 8 of 19 field goal attempts. Cameron Payne scored 31 points despite making 7 of his 9 attempts from beyond the arc. Devin Booker scored 12 points, had 8 assists, but only made 4-of-13 field goal attempts. Deandre Ayton and Chris Paul were both absent for the Suns. Paul's groin ailment kept him out of the majority of the series. After colliding with Bruce Brown in Game 5 on Tuesday night, Ayton suffered a rib injury, for which he was declared out on Thursday afternoon. Phoenix has now lost a blowout with a berth in the conference finals on the line in back-to-back seasons, which is probably more distressing for Suns fans. In the seventh game of their Western Conference semifinal series last year, the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Suns by a score of 33 points.
The victor of the "California State Championship" series will now face the Nuggets in the conference finals. Golden State Warriors are down 3-2 in the series to the Los Angeles Lakers.
