Andrei Svechnikov of the Carolina Hurricanes has finished his season. The organization announced on Tuesday that the all-star forward would have season-ending surgery on Thursday for a right knee injury suffered against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday.
Dr. Marty Isbell of Raleigh Orthopaedic will conduct the reconstructive surgery on his right ACL, according to the club. The decision was taken after consultation with "world authorities in the sector," according to club president and general manager Don Waddell. "We're certain Andrei will recover completely," Waddell said in a statement. Svechnikov, 22, is one of the league's most explosive young power forwards and appeared in his first NHL All-Star Game this season.
"I hate it more than anything for him, because he's worked so hard to get to this stage in the year when it's enjoyable," Canes coach Rod Brind'Amour said following the team's practice at PNC Arena on Tuesday. "He's not going to be a part of it in the future. It's difficult. "I'm hoping it's not too disastrous, but I know he's not.... you know, this is a long-term injury, so it's not fantastic."
Before Tuesday's game, the Canes (43-14-8) were tied with the New Jersey Devils in the Metro in terms of winning percentage. Svechnikov traveled with the club to New Jersey for Sunday's game, which the Devils won 3-0, but was unable to participate. Svechnikov afterwards sent a group text to the squad, according to Necas, explaining the situation with his injury.
"I'm sorry for him," Canes captain Jordan Staal said on Tuesday. "We're set for a major postseason run and to receive that news is awful. We sympathize with him, but as a community, we must go on and find methods to replace the void he has left.
After making a check on the Knights' Alec Martinez, Svechnikov, 22, was hurt Saturday at PNC Arena, favoring his right leg. He left the game for examination before returning in the third period.
The loss of Svechnikov is a significant blow for the Canes, who top the Metropolitan Division. He's been on the Canes' top line with Sebastian Aho and Seth Jarvis, and he was tied for second on the club in points with Aho entering Tuesday's game against Winnipeg. Striker Martin Necas, the team's leading scorer, stated on Monday night that he spoke with Svechnikov.

"I was honestly on the fence about even coming back and playing this tournament," the 35-year-old Atlanta native told reporters afterward. Weinman's final table featured Jan-Peter Jachtmann, who landed in fourth place and took home $3 million, as well as Toby Lewis, who finished seventh and secured $1.42 million. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the main event's entry pool far outpaced the previous record of 8,773 set in 2006. "I've always kind of felt that poker was kind of going in a dying direction, but to see the numbers at the World Series this year has been incredible," Weinman said. "And to win this main event, it doesn't feel real. I mean, [there's] so much luck in a poker tournament. I thought I played very well." Steven Jones finished second, securing $6.5 million. And Adam Walton settled for third and a $4 million prize.
