For a brief moment, it appeared like the Los Angeles Lakers were on their way to their best win of the season. The Boston Celtics then awoke.
On Tuesday, the Celtics upset the Lakers 122-118 in overtime in one of the craziest NBA games of the season. Given that Boston was up 20 points midway in the third quarter, it shouldn't have been a memorable game, but it was because of LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
The Lakers' twin stars led their team on a 32-5 run between the third and fourth quarters, giving them a double-digit advantage with only a few minutes left. Crypto.com The arena was rocking, but the team was exhausted.
Tatum ended with 44 points on 15-of-29 shooting (5-of-10 from deep), nine rebounds, and six assists to continue his early-season MVP candidacy. Jaylen Brown finished with 25 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Meanwhile, James finished with 33 points, 9 rebounds, and 9 assists, while Davis finished with 37 points and 12 rebounds.
It seems strange to label a game a must-win for the NBA's top team, but the Celtics were coming off two consecutive defeats, one of which was a humiliating blowout in the same stadium against the Los Angeles Clippers. After a fairytale start to the season, a loss to the Lakers, who are presently 11-16, would have caused a mini-panic.
Instead, it is the Lakers who are kept in the dark. The Celtics were clearly favored, but the seasoned team's exhaustion down the stretch has to raise some unpleasant doubts for anybody who believes Los Angeles will have a mid-season surge.
