Alex Ovechkin reaches 800-goal mark with hat trick

Make it 800 for the Great 8.

Washington Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin scored his 800th-career goal on a hat trick in the Caps' 7-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday. Ovechkin got his big night off to a shaky start, swiping away at the puck on a broken play until it sneaked past Petr Mrazek. The second goal couldn't have come at a better time: pouncing on a stray puck behind Mrazek and willing it in as Chicago's defenders stretched over the crease to keep it out. If you were hoping for a classic Ovi one-timer, you might be disappointed tonight, as the Russian star seems keen on scoring the scrappiest goals imaginable.

On another goal mouth scramble, he got his third of the night, methodically corralling the puck and putting it high in the net, away from a frantic Mrazek. The 37-year-old is one goal away from tying Gordie Howe for second all-time in NHL goals, and is closing in on Wayne Gretzky's record of 894. Ovechkin has 644 assists to go along with his 800 goals in 1,305 career games, for a total of 1,444 points. Despite his 18th NHL season, the Great 8 is still going strong, with 20 goals and 14 assists in 31 games this season. Washington is presently sixth in the Metropolitan Division, sitting outside of the playoffs with a 15-12-4 record and 34 points.
